Binghamton University offers the attention of a small college with the choices and opportunities of a research university. Our students are among the most gifted in the nation and our faculty are devoted teachers and mentors committed to helping students obtain the skills to become global citizens. Binghamton students take advantage of excellent facilities for learning and recreation, attending concerts, participating in clubs and intramurals, hiking the nearly 200-acre nature preserve and cheering on 21 Division I athletic teams. The community offers professional baseball and hockey, opera, First Fridays featuring local artists’ works, and dozens of parks and activities. Wired and wireless, the campus has state-of-the-art labs, four libraries and dozens of spaces for students to meet and collaborate on coursework and projects. Our residential communities are close-knit, nurturing relationships and opportunities, and include a faculty master in each community to help link living and learning. Our Discovery Program offers additional resources for freshman and upperclassmen to link all aspects of their University life and enhance Binghamton’s living-learning environment. With more than 520 programs to choose from, Binghamton has one of the largest study-abroad programs in the nation. Students also take advantage of 3/2 and 4/1 accelerated or combined-degree programs, allowing them to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five rather than six years, saving time and tuition while increasing their marketability. Graduates command top starting salaries because of their critical-thinking, analytical and communication skills. The Career Development Center offers support to research career options or seek assistance exploring job fields or launching a search for a semester internship, a summer job, or first full-time job. Students have access to online career tools, resume writing assistance, interview skills coaching, staff and peer advising and on-campus job fairs featuring up to 400 employers. Recognized nationally with seven major awards for achievements in internationalization, Binghamton excels in providing comprehensive opportunities for students to become world citizens. Our programs are multi-faceted and innovative. Our students take three semesters of foreign language, many study abroad, and on campus, there are nearly 2,200 international students from nearly 100 nations. Cultural and international festivals abound on campus. Our Languages Across the Curriculum program promotes use of languages other than English in non-language courses, helping students become aware of intercultural perspectives and providing opportunity for them to continuously use their language skills. The University emphasizes entrepreneurship with an Entrepreneurship Across the Curriculum program aimed at students, incentives and assistance for faculty who agree to offer an entrepreneurship component on a continuing basis in their classes, and a concentration in entrepreneurship available to students. Also nationally recognized for its green initiatives, the campus has converted more than 85,000 square-feet of formerly paved areas to green space within the past five years, and offers dozens of environmentally related or sustainability courses each year. Together, Binghamton’s faculty and students create a stimulating campus environment that is supportive, rewarding and fun. From designing sensors that detect toxins, to writing and directing plays, to conducting research studies for local municipalities to improve services and programs for area residents, to promoting the ‘greenness’ of campus through reduce, reuse, recycle events and programs, Binghamton students thrive in a diverse community that promotes the vigorous exchange of innovative ideas.
