Located in the heart of Manhattan, Hunter offers students the stimulating learning environment and career-building opportunities you might expect from a college that’s been a part of the world’s most exciting city since 1870. The largest college in the City University of New York, Hunter pulses with energy. Hunter’s vitality stems from a large, highly diverse faculty and student body. Its school of Arts and Sciences, Education, the Health Professions and Social Work provide an affordable first-rate education. Undergraduates have extraordinary opportunities to conduct high-level research under renowned faculty, and many opt for credit-bearing internships in such exciting fields as media, the arts, and government. The college’s high standards and special programs ensure a challenging education. The Block Program for first-year students keeps classmates together as they pursue courses in the liberal arts, pre-health science, pre-nursing, pre-med or honors. A range of honors programs is available for students with strong academic records, including the highly competitive tuition-free Hunter CUNY Honors College for entering freshmen and the Thomas Hunter Honors Program, which emphasizes small classes with personalized mentoring by the most outstanding faculty. Qualified students also benefit from Hunter’s participation in minority science research and training programs, the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Minority Undergraduate Program, and many other passports to professional success. NY State authorized the first doctoral degrees to be awarded jointly between CUNY and Hunter – DPH in public health and PhDs in biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics. Hunter secured state approval for new master’s degrees in the teaching of Chinese, mental health counseling and nursing for the clinical nurse leader specialty. The CUNY trustees approved a new nursing BS for students who already have a BA. This will increase admissions to the high demand undergraduate program by 25%. Also approved were an advanced certificate in applied behavioral analysis, the first program at CUNY to teach this method of education for individuals with autism, and a new MFA in playwriting. An MFA in dance will come before Hunter’s Senate this spring.Hunter achieved a long-term goal to have at least 25% of its enrollment in graduate programs. The mean SAT of our freshmen is now over 1100. Hunter also has the largest and most selective branch of CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College. In anticipation of the new CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College, Dr. Kenneth Olden, former head of National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of NIH was appointed acting and founding dean. The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing is now a free-standing school nstead of a division of the School of Health Professions. Dr. Kristine Gebbie was named acting dean of the School of Nursing. The School of Social Work will relocate to a new building in East Harlem which will house the Social Work school, the new CUNY School of Public Health, and the archives and art collection of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies. A $40 million gift from the Silberman Fund, will enable CUNY to build this facility.Hunter completed its self-study in preparation for its ten-year review. The team visit is scheduled for April 26-29, 2009.The Hunter Senate voted to eliminate the requirement for the minor, to place responsibility for the minor in the hands of the minor, not major department, and to make the minor optional for the student and for the minor department.
