A highly selective, independent, nondenominational coed liberal arts college of 1,700 students in suburban Philadelphia, Ursinus is nationally recognized for fostering undergraduate research through one-on-one relationships with faculty, internship and study abroad programs, and a core curriculum that includes the Common Intellectual Experience for first-year students. With an outstanding record of placing students in graduate, law and medical schools, Ursinus is one of only 50 colleges nationwide whose seniors may compete for Watson fellowships; one of a handful of colleges highlighted in a book about the National Survey of Student Engagement’s Project DEEP (Documenting Effective Educational Practices), and one of 10 founding institutional members of Project Pericles, which works to fosters civic and social engagement among college students nationwide. Ursinus competes in Division III athletics in the prestigious Centennial Conference, along with Bryn Mawr, Franklin & Marshall, Haverford, Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore. In recent years, new majors in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, American Studies, Theater and Dance and the opening of a new performing arts center have enhanced the curricular offerings of the college. The college’s relatively new Environmental Studies major is also gaining prominence as partnerships among the college and organizations seeking to improve local ecosystems become more extensive.
