According to the school, Millsaps College offers a classroom experience that students continue to rate highlythe college’s distinguished faculty inspires students to debate, discuss and ask questions. Since 1890, Millsaps has been committed to freedom of inquiry and expression in the classroom and on the campus. Millsaps’ programs are designed to cultivate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; creativity, sensitivity, and tolerance; the ability to inform and challenge others; and an appreciation for humanity and the universe. \r\nMillsaps is unique in several areas. First, Millsaps is recognized for its strengths in both liberal arts and business. It is one of the few liberal arts colleges in the U.S. to hold both a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and accreditation at both the graduate and undergraduate level by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Through its Else School of Management, Millsaps offers a five-year MBA to its business undergraduates and also provides a strongly supportive environment for its arts and sciences undergraduates to obtain masters degrees in business.\r\nMillsaps’ new W.M. Keck Center for Instrumental and Biochemical Comparative Archaeology is the only undergraduate facility of its kind in the world. The multi-disciplinary research laboratory provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to explore complex archeological questions using advanced bioanalytical and biochemical techniques. Each year 4-6 Keck Fellows assist in gathering the artifacts studied in the lab from the College’s archaeological field programs in Yucatn, Mexico, and northern Albania. The lab houses an inductively-coupled plasma spectrometer with laser ablation, a gas-chromotography spectrometer, a liquid-chromotography spectrometer, and a portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer. \r\n\r\nAt the 4,000-acre Helen Moyers Biocultural Reserve and learning center in the state of Yucatan, Mexico, students excavate ancient Mayan archaeological sites, conduct environmental studies of the jungle, research the biology and geology of the area, and live in a sustainable solar-powered facility constructed of materials inspired by the native Mayan architecture. Millsaps faculty develop and offer courses in areas such as anthropology, biology, business, chemistry, math, education, English, geology, and sociology. The Yucatan program also includes a newly-renovated teaching and living facility for international business studies which is located in the large city of Merida.\r\nThe college’s 1 Campus, 1 Community program offers students many opportunities for academic service-learning projects, community-based scholarship, internships, social enterprise, and strategic planning for urban renewal. With a special focus on the Midtown neighborhood adjacent to the college, Millsaps students develop long-term partnerships with local non-profit agencies, public schools, artists, architects, and neighborhood residents to learn about and participate in social analysis and transformation. Among the programs in which students can participate are the neighborhood’s Little Samaritan Montessori School, the Parent Resource Center, the Project Innovation after school program, the Work Ready program and Life Skills School, and the Meals with Wheels program for the elderly. The Faith & Work Initiative connects individual passions with learning, meaning, service, and career. In the Faith & Work program, students explore their calling in life, the kind of careers that will be meaningful, and the talents and aspirations they may use for responsible citizenship and humane leadership. Students may gain work experience through internships in their chosen field, embark on meaning-based road trips to places such as New York or the Mississippi Delta, engage in service-learning courses and projects and semester-long volunteer commitments, and learn from successful professionals who reflect on the meaning of work.
