According to the school, Merrimack College is a four-year, independent college grounded in the liberal arts and guided by the teachings of St. Augustine. Home to the Girard School of Business and International Commerce, the college is one of the few Catholic liberal arts colleges to offer programs in both science and engineering. Merrimack’s contemporary academic approach of fusing liberal arts with professional education means students become engaged and ready to make critical, moral and informed decisions of thought, communication and action in their own lives and in service to others. Each year the faculty, trustees, and students participate in Pellegrinago Italia, a pilgrimage in Italy that follows the path of St. Augustine. Participants prepare by reading the writing of St. Augustine’s in study groups for months prior to the trip.\r\n\r\nThe college has a 600 seat performing arts center, observatory, two art galleries, one specifically for student work. Located in a suburban setting just 25 miles north of Boston, Merrimack offers a strong co-operative education program for all majors, undergraduate research opportunities and extensive service learning experiences that promote social responsibility. Merrimack’s 2,200 students represent 26 states and 14 countries; nearly 85% live on campus.
