Hiram College offers distinctive programs that set us apart from other small, private liberal arts colleges. About half of Hiram’s students study abroad at some point during their four years. In 2008 – 2009, a group of 19 students led by two faculty members traveled around the world to study climate change, stopping in nine different locations. Common study abroad destinations include France, China, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, and several African countries. Because Hiram students receive credits for the courses taught by Hiram faculty on these trips, studying abroad will not impede progress in their majors or delay graduation. Another unique aspect of a Hiram education is our academic calendar, known as the Hiram Plan. Our semesters are divided into 12-week and 3-week periods. Students usually enroll in three courses during each 12-week, and one intensive course during the 3-week. Many students spend the 3-week on study abroad trips or taking unusual courses not typically offered during the 12-week. Our small classes encourage interaction between students and their professors. Students can work with professors on original research projects and often participate in musical groups and intramural sports teams alongside faculty members.
