California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is a single complex of 6 professional schools-Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater-conceived as a community of artists. The Institute is a training ground, a professional center and laboratory of the arts. Interaction among the arts is a fundamental premise of the Institute, and the several schools have developed numerous special programs that cross traditional lines. The faculty members are all working artists and eminent educators and provide students with relevant professional training. The Institute consists of studios, workshops, theaters, galleries, editing rooms, sound stages, electronic music and recording studios, computer art and animation labs and performance spaces. Certain facilities, such as the Walt Disney Modular Theater, are among the most remarkable anywhere. CalArts does not require entrance examinations, except for the TOEFL, which is required of applicants whose native language is not English. For first-time college students, an official copy of the US equivalent of a secondary school graduation certificate must be submitted. It is recommended that all students live on campus for at least their first year at CalArts. Living on campus provides students with an opportunity to become fully acquainted with the campus and its resources, as well as fellow students. CalArts 60-acre residential campus is located in the Los Angeles Suburb of Santa Clarita. The campus is north of Los Angeles, adjacent to Interstate 5 on McBean Parkway and 40 miles from Los Angeles International Airport, and 21 miles from Burbank International Airport. Preferred transportation from the airports are either rental cars or private shuttle service.\r\n
