Millikin University
Decatur
When James Millikin founded Millikin University in 1901 in Decatur, IL, his approach to education was unique. It combined theory and practice, requiring students to ‘connect the dots’ of their learning inside and outside of the classroom.\r\n\r\nToday, Millikin, an independent, four-year university, takes this approach one step further with “performance-learning”. Practice is no longer enough. To be truly prepared for today’s global economy, Millikin students win opportunities to perform their learning by working with real companies, on real projects. The result: Millikin grads are better prepared after graduation than others. Students do everything from student-teach in Taiwan to participate moot court trials; they close $1 million deals for local companies, research human twin genes with professors, and win auditions before agents in New York City.\r\n\r\nFor more than 100 years, Millikin University has been challenging students to reach their full intellectual potential and changing lives by preparing them for meaningful careers and personal lives. Millikin University is a private, primarily undergraduate, 75-acre institution of 2,300 students. With four colleges and schools—the College of Arts and Sciences, Tabor School of Business, the College of Fine Arts, and the College of Professional Studies—and over 60 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs, Millikin prepares its students for professional success, democratic citizenship in a diverse and dynamic global environment, and a personal life of meaning and value. Millikin students learn through real-world projects that reinforce classroom experiences, help develop practical skills, and serve the global community. Millikin students learn to see the connections with other academic disciplines and understand the diversity of human experience, the interactions between technology and society. Millikin students learn about themselves and others, developing a respect for differences and for the dignity of all. Employers and graduate schools continue to prize Millikin graduates; 98% of Millikin’s 2010 graduates gained professional employment or entered graduate/professional school within six months of graduation.
