According to the school, Johnson C. Smith University continues to be a leader among private liberal arts colleges in the nation and serves as Charlotte’s premier independent urban university. \r\n\r\nFounded in 1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute, the university enrolls approximately 1,500 students and confers bachelor’s degrees to hundreds of students each year in 27 different majors. \r\n\r\nEach student receives a laptop computer equipped with the latest software and wireless capabilities. Internet access is provided through electronic data ports in the library, dormitory rooms and multimedia classrooms. Network access is available through dial-up modem for off-campus students. \r\n\r\nThe university’s service learning component, which combines academics and community service, has become a national model to other higher education institutions. Extensive career development opportunities abound through co-op programs and internships with more than 90 companies. \r\n\r\nA new initiative, the Metropolitan College, is a diverse and flexible academic program that delivers our current core and undergraduate studies curricula to working adults who are seeking to complete a degree or engage in lifelong learning in a supportive environment. \r\n\r\nIn addition, JCSU has four Centers of Excellence that make up the Smith Institute for Applied Research: Center for Excellence in Diversity and Business Workforce Development; Center of Excellence in Global Education; Center of Excellence in Homeland Security-Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; and the Center of Excellence in Minority Health.\r\n
