Berea College
According to the school, Berea College is distinctive; it charges no tuition and admits only academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. As the South’s first interracial and coeducational college, Berea has been national recognized for its emphasis on learning, labor, and service. In addition to rigorous academic pursuits in the classroom, all students are required to serve the College in campus jobs, working at least 10 hours weekly as part of their educational experience, Doing so helps students learn specific job skills, develop a strong work ethic, and allows them to earn money for other educational expenses such as books, room, and board. As a residential campus, learning to live in community is also part of the Berea’s comprehensive educational experience. Berea graduates go on to distinguish themselves and the College in many fields, living out the College’s motto: God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.
